History

The earliest reference to gardening activities in the Parish of Holywell-cum-Needingworth is a show schedule from 1914. However, the earliest dates on trophies only go back to 1948. We can assume that competitive gardening has been a feature of the community since then. In the late 70's a number of 'prominent' parishioners were invited to become Vice-Presidents and they helped to fund the annual village Vegetable, Fruit and Flower Show. As interest in gardening grew in the early 1990's an inaugural meeting was held in the local pub and a club was formed.

The object of the club is to promote good horticultural practice among members by:

  • holding meetings for lectures, discussions and demonstrations
  • holding horticultural shows and competitions
  • establishing a lending library of horticultural books, magazines and videos
  • arranging visits to gardens and other sites to observe gardening in practice.

The emphasis has been on creating a friendly atmosphere at meetings without the need to be able to spout the Latin names of plants; useful as they are in some circumstances.
